UK Smaller Companies

Update 1st December 2009: Smaller companies as a whole had a very good period from March 2009, outperforming larger companies over most of this period, until the last month or so. If the economic recovery continues in 2010, albeit less robust, there is still scope for more agile managers too outperform.

If you sort on the last month’s performance, glance along the row of the top performers to see how they have performed over long periods – you are looking for consistency for each period.

Artemis UK Smaller Companies is showing an improving trend, we like that. Similarly Liontrust Intellectual Capital.

But it is the two Close funds which inevitably catch the eye. This is where you have to understand that you might use this sorting process to build a short list, and that you certainly mustn’t just dive into the top performing fund. The Close Beacon fund invests into AIM companies, that is typically very small and illiquid and very volatile (though clearly volatile in an upward direction in recent times). For most investors (though still those with a taste for risk) the Close Special Situations fund is more appropriate. It is just over three years old, and still a small £11m in size – the size undoubtedly adds to the potential for volatility, and ideally we would like to see some consistent buying from discretionary fund managers before jumping on board
