Update 9th December 2011: If you sort the table by ‘One year cumulative value’ and order by ‘Best Performing’ you can glance along the row to see performance over various periods. What we are looking for is consistency of performance.

Japanese equities have flattered to deceive investors in recent history. Attractive company valuations and the potential for global inflation to wake Japan’s sleeping economy offer opportunities for investors. Yet Japanese equties have benefited from the country's position as a perceived safe haven. Lower volatility and a route to emerging market growth have meant the Nikkei 225 outperformed all other global stock market indices over the last 6 months.

Schroder Japan Alpha Plus has dissapointed over 6 months while its stable mate Schroder Tokyo (the granddaddy of the sector) has recovered to 6th in the 6 monthly rankings. For the brave, the more volatile Legg Mason Japan Equity continues to top the sector across 6th month and 1 year timeframes. But the fund has taken a hit over 1 month (ranking 52nd) which is indicative of its volatility figure.

Would be investors should also look at Japanese Smaller Companies, our “trade for the decade” back in 2010.
