Sterling Strategic Bonds

Update 9th December 2011: If you sort the table by ‘One year cumulative value’ and order by ‘Best Performing’ you can glance along the row to see performance over various periods. What we are looking for is consistency of performance.

The Strategic Bond sector has come under a lot of criticism of late as managers are accused of taking excess investment risk by investing in high yield bonds in order to boost returns. While their high correlation to equity markets means those funds with large high yield positions performed well during October when markets rallied go back to earlier in the summer, when markets tanked, and the story was very different.

There's no better example of this than Invesco Perpetual Tactical Bond which lost -3.93% in August and propped up the monthly performance tables. Fast forward to October and it topped the chart beiore sliiping back down the table as equity markets faltered once more. That is why investors must engage brain when investing in this sector.

We favour funds with low yields and proven outperformance such as JPM Strategic Bond – an excellent fund which utilises its global investment remit and maintains a low risk profile compared to many peers.
