There are plenty of individual UK businesses adjusting to a difficult environment. Larger businesses are much more dependent on the emerging world for growth; many smaller businesses are coping very well with the UK doldrums, by being more imaginative and dynamic than their larger competitors

A mix of greater confidence in the future and outstanding stock market value (lower prices!) will eventually trigger the volume of investors needed to sustain a new bull market.

The former might simply arise from the UK having the tools to deal with outstanding debt issues - a sovereign currency, a fully functioning central bank, a government with comprehensive tax raising (fiscal) powers.

But even in these very difficult conditions, there are UK growth funds performing commendably.For example, the JOHCM UK Opps fund has grown 4.3% in 2011, and better still from Liontrust Special Sits, up 7.5% (see page 38). We will continue to look out for such
