Lower risk

Although the First State Global Infrastructure fund is up a respectable amount in the last 6 months to June 2010, it holds too much risk for this segment of our DIY funds bearing in mind the prevailing environment.

Therefore it is replaced by the Newton Global Dynamic Bond fund. This is an absolute return fund, so has more of an emphasis on capital preservation than pure global bond funds, which will perform better if sterling weakens. But in the short term we should not take sterling weakness for granted.

Although the BNY Mellon Global Strategic Bond performance was unexciting, it was achieved with very limited volatility. And the limited objective of this small selection (better return than deposit and inflation) was comfortably achieved.

The Standard Life Global Absolute Return fund employs around 30 different strategies to achieve our limited objective - and it did so with flying colours and limited volatility.
